New Music: Mountain Bird – Hiding Underwater

Sweden’s Mountain Bird (aka Adam Öhman) has released what he calls his ‘darkest song yet’ in the form of Hiding Underwater. Check out the track, which will feature on his upcoming DearBrainLetMeSleep EP, below.

With the dark trip-hop tones of the arrangement setting the scene for an emotive and atmospheric journey, Hiding Underwater feels cathartic at times. Musically and lyrically Ohman captures that overwhelming desire to escape – literally and figuratively – that can overcome us in tough times. With its solemn yet open tones and heart-wrenching vocals, the song creates the sensation that you’re living those moments with him.

Öhman says he was living in Berlin and struggling to settle there after a breakup with his long-time girlfriend. Hiding Underwater is “about living with a depressive state of mind and somehow always looking at things from a perspective of melancholy”. On the title, Adam explains that, during the darkest of times, “I just want to jump down and sleep under the surface of water where everything is quite and calm for a little while.”

Adam continues: “I was in a really dark place when I wrote this. And at that time almost felt like hurting myself or do something worse was a good idea, but I got myself together. I just got so tired of always trying to cope with my brain the first thing in the morning and not just wake up and go you know… It’s like you have to tame a beast every time you’d wanna do something and therefore I wanted to swap my brain with someone. Just anyone.”
