New Music: otsyuda – resin

When you feature former members of both Blankenberge and Encarta 98, there’s going to be a lot of expectation that your music is going to both define and defy genres. Toronto-based otsyuda surpass that on resin.

You can hear the influence of those acts in the way shoegaze is given a strong role within the arrangement, but there’s also a visceral alt.rock presence that harks back to both grunge and pre-Britpop indie acts like Curve and Lush.

Yes, the song leans into the past, but when it sounds this good, especially around the glistening vocal and production, that is an added bonus as the quintet shows they can carry the weight of their own musical history with ease. Oh, and that long fadeout is just bliss.

You can download resin on Bandcamp and stream it on Spotify and YouTube Music. The band plays Collective Arts in Toronto on the 10th of January; for ticket details, check out otsyuda on Instagram.
