New Music: Phoebe Ryan – Reality

Late last year, we covered the wonderful ICIMY by American Phoebe Ryan. She’s back in 2020 with new song Reality, which is accompanied by this delightful animated video.

The bright tones of the song take 80’s pop, prime Scandi sounds, and grafts them onto to a delicious trap-style beat. Ryan’s vocals are soothing but with an undercurrent of danger and desire. And her voice? She has that tone that lets you know she has not only lived the lyrics but knows how to artfully express the emotions those experiences unearth.

Ryan says about the inspiration behind the lyrics, “Reality is about a time in my life where I was very dishonest with myself, trusting people who shouldn’t be trusted, and basically just living a lie because it was far less painful than the truth. I love the lyrics, they’re all straight from my dumb little heart, but I think the production of the song is what really hits me. It’s so upbeat and psychedelic, anthemic, bright, yet sorrowful.”
