New Music: Silver Lake – Under The Silver Lake

Jesse Koch and Marleen Hoebe are Silver Lake, a dreampop duo from The Netherlands with a difference. Under The Silver Lake sees them explore darker territory than you’d expect, both in the song itself and its accompanying video.

The lush sounds and dreamy vocals you’d expect from a dreampop track are certainly present, but with a diversion into more emotive and abstract worlds and themes. 60s-style cinematic flourishes and a rock guitar create an air of suspense, while the lyrics feel laden with anticipation and maybe a hint of existential angst. Under The Silver Lake is thoughtful, surefooted, and highly moving.

They disclosed about the song, “We wrote this track after seeing the namesake movie Under the Silver Lake. A very surreal and aesthetic film. We were both really intrigued by it. The purpose of this song was to translate the mysterious feeling of the film into music.”

The add, “For us, the ‘Silver Lake’ has become a bit of a symbol for the subconscious. A place where all your memories and fears and desires hide. A place where you learn things about yourself, where things live that you thought you had forgotten. Then, during our brainstorming sessions for the video, the title of the book The Waiting Room of the Subconscious came up, and we thought that was a beautiful image to support that idea. As if you have some sort of waiting room in your head, filled with memories or thoughts or fantasies trying to get your attention, but until you let them in or deal with them, they remain there waiting.”
