New Music: Smacked Youth – RUT

Blessed with a supremely catchy chorus and some wonderfully grizzly pop-punk sounds, RUT by Smacked Youth is a whole lot of fun, sonically. But the more you listen, the more the tone and message of the track subtly but irrevocably changes.

Grungy guitar flourishes give a hint of its emotional undercurrent, drawing your attention to the dark undertow that gives RUT so much power. While the singalong chorus is instantly memorable, it also reinforces the pain and heartache that threads its way through every note and word.

There’s a serious message behind the lyrics of this pop-punk bop. Reveals frontman Sam D’Agostino, “RUT is about being in a long-distance relationship with someone who lives in another state and trying to work out how to build a life together even though neither people want to move to a different city as they are comfortable where they are with the lives they have…”

“… realising that neither people fit in outside of their home city’s and trying to be convinced that they don’t need each other anymore and that the whole long-distance relationship is a bit of a stretch.”
