New Music: twin bloom – summer’s gone

A beguiling mix of power pop and Paisley Underground grooves, summer’s gone is a wired, wistful affair.

An early flavour of twin blooms’ self-titled EP, it winds its way through the sounds and sights of the American West Coast, especially that particular brand of country-rock-infused indie textures and melodies that are often typical of The Golden State’s approach to melodic, introspective rock.

A lean arrangement produces an unexpectedly lush sound; the vocals ache with memories and regret, the lyrics talk of friends leaving, a broken car, and watching wind chimes dance – strong images revealing a sucker punch sensation that, while there will be more summers, they will never be the same. Fans of Alvvays, Real Estate, and Teenage Fanclub will find much to identify with in the sharply defined lyrics, fuzzed edges of the arrangements, and vocals that personify heartache.
