New Music: Twin Ritual – Norma Jean

Hailing from San Diego, California, indie band Twin Ritual (Laura Levenhagen on vocals and synths, Anthony Ramirez on bass and synths, Michael Buehl on drums and Antonia Estrada on guitar) serve a mean line in cutting yet dreamy rock on new track Norma Jean.

There’s a familiar yet fresh sound to Norma Jean, as it takes inspiration from the New Wave and post-punk movements of the 1980s. Laura Levenhagen’s vocals have a wry but warm tone to them, with a stunning resemblance to Deborah Harry and Beth Ditto coming through at times. There’s a sharpness and tightness to the rhythm section that’s energising on its own, and with a classic girl-group monologue about three minutes in, the song echoes the past without being a slave to it.
