New Music: Twist Helix – Vultures

We’re big fans of Newcastle trio Twist Helix, and their Ouseburn album was one of our favourites from 2018. In 2020 their sound has grown more vital and vibrant, as you can hear on Vultures.

The song will feature on their Machinery album, and on the evidence of Vultures, we can expect great things from the LP. The trio has always taken indie and electro and then fashioned them into something different. Still, here they have taken that to another level. It’s less reflective than their previous work and carries a greater lyrical and musical punch in the arrangement. Bea Garcia’s vocals take a more commanding role here, giving the song even greater agency and urgency. Vultures is evidence of a band finding their own voice and not being afraid to use it to shout from the rooftops.

They say about the song, “Vultures specifically deals with those in the music industry, whose relation to creatives resembles that of facultative predators and scavengers. With this single we wanted to say that as an artist you’re in an inherently vulnerable position that makes it very easy to be preyed upon. There are vultures out there who want to feed off of you, your talents and then leave you with little to show for it.

From our point of view the music industry exists to extract works from creatives whilst divesting them of a sense of their worth and their feeling of agency. Too many good bands burn out or cease to be because of dodgy management deals, paltry streaming revenues, and a broader architecture designed to place power in the hands of everyone but the artist.”
