New Music: WUT – Mingling with the Thorns

I’m a sucker for the early 80s sound of Flying Nun, Subway and Sarah Records, so it was inevitable that I would fall for WUT’s new single Mingling with the Thorns. Be sure to watch the video for the title track to their upcoming album!

The Vancouver-based trio – guitarist Kaity McWhinney, bassist Tracey Vath, and drummer Lauren Smith – bring that era to life but also update it. The very stripped-down feel of the production allows the emotion of the vocals and light yet raw power of the arrangement to shine through. But the lyrics reflect modern-day concerns, with the song functioning as a critique on capitalism and our place within it.

The Mingling with the Thorns LP is set for release on the 23rd of August via Athens, Georgia based HHBTM Records. You can pick up one of the limited-edition red or black vinyl versions of the album over on Bandcamp.

Mingling with the Thorns will appeal to fans of Marine Girls and Heavenly, and can also be heard on Spotify and Apple Music. For album news and other listening options for the band’s music, check out their Instagram page.
