New Music: Desperate Journalist – Everything You Wanted

Desperate Journalist’s fourth album Maximum Sorrow is heading our way on the 2nd of July (the vinyl editions look especially delicious by the way) and on listening to Everything You Wanted, I feel confident in saying it’ll be their best yet.

There’s no hiding that I’m a big fan of Desperate Journalist (am literally wearing the t-shirt as I type!), so there’s no surprise that I immediately fell for the sounds of Everything You Wanted. For me though, there’s a subtle shift in the band’s sound that has sent it in unexpected musical directions but still fits the band perfectly.

The dark, emotionally visceral tones of the and vocals arrangement remain in place, but the rougher edges of previous songs have been tempered. It’s allowed a complex brew of influences to come to the fore; post-punk, 80s indie, and the glossy ambrosia of The Sundays come to mind when I listen to Everything You Wanted. The guitars owe more to Fleetwood Mac or Heart at times, the lyrics could only be from here and now, and the chorus is both maudlin and incredibly catchy. This song will be one of my musical highlights of the year.

The band plays London’s Rough Trade East on the 28th of July.
