New Music: Fior Parie – Clementine

California’s Fior Parie has a sound that invites favourable comparisons with the likes of Mazzy Star, Soko, and Ty Segall. That might sound like a contradictory range of influences, but on Clementine, it works with considerable ease.

The track echoes another song of hers, Charlotte Sometimes Always, in the way it embodies a very American sound. Americana is less to the fore here, though there’s still that sense that the lyrics are telling you a personal but universal story. What you pick up instead is a more grunge and prime alt.rock edge. Think Throwing Muses meets Hole, but with a country flavour to the guitar, as her vocal delivery takes on a harder, at times more confrontational delivery.
