New Music: Hot Minute – Drive
It’s a third visit to the blog in about six months for local band Hot Minute. After Hell Is Empty and Magic, the Manchester trio is back with another sublime synthpop number, Drive. Have a listen below and see what you think.
Drive has a debt at times to peak 80s electropop, mainly the glossy brand executed so well by Pet Shop Boys and Erasure. That upbeat yet slightly melancholic ambiance is taken in hand here and given a very modern sheen. K-Pop hooks, sharp synths and cascading drum fills give the song a radio-friendly, sophisticated feel. If you’ve ever been with a potential lover late at night, or just appreciate quality pop, you will find a lot in this song to love.
Bella of Hot Minute says about the track: “We always envisaged the song to be super 80’s when it was done and everything started to come together when we got down what became the baddest-ass sax solo we’d heard in a while – which we didn’t actually add until midway through 2019, It was important for us that Drive was completed in a way that really hits you in the feels, both audibly and visually.”
Fellow band member Keely adds: “You can be a bad bitch AND your own boss. You don’t need a ‘Charlie’ and you don’t just have to be one specific thing or another. You don’t have to answer to anyone. In our case this applies to us as women, but the message is universal – don’t underestimate yourself, you don’t need permission.”
Drive is out now and is available to stream on Spotify and YouTube, Details on other platforms to listen or buy the song can be found on the band’s Twitter and Instagram accounts.
